Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida is caused by the 25th day following conception. It is one of the most common congenital birth defects affecting 1 to 2 in every 1000 live born babies. The neural tube fails to close properly which causes damage to the spinal cord and vertebrae. The 'normal' formation of the spinal cord ends high in the lumbar part of the spine. With Spina Bifida, the spinal cord is often 'tethered' to the very low end of the spinal column.
Most people born with spina bifida usually experience some form of paralysis which affects their mobility as well as their bowel and bladder control. In so called 'mild cases' this often causes weakness in the legs and feet, or can make the feet turn in or out, pain in the back or legs is common, and difficulties often occur which change the bladder and bowel function, all with varying degrees of distress.
In even more serious cases, the baby is often born with the spinal cord open through the back ! The child / adult is confined to a wheelchair and has lifelong worries covering a whole range of issues. Hydrocephalus occurs in more than 85% of babies with spina bifida. The cerebrospinal fluid is obstructed, causing pressure on the brain, damage to the tissue and the head enlarges.
Despite my difficulties, I have 'mild' spina bifida occulta.
I consider myself very lucky. Many people with Spina Bifida, including myself, learn to live with, or to overcome problems, and with a positive attitude and lots of determination, gain confidence, and go on to lead fulfilling independent lives, often greatly assisted by organisations such as the Kent Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus, KASBAH. The National Association in the UK, ASBAH and The Spina Bifida Association of America, SBAA and similar organisations in most other countries. All such organisations rely on generous donations in order to continue to be so supportive

The Spina Bifida Associations rely on the generosity of all of us to do their wonderful work. Graham is a 'trustee' of the Kent Association. Graham's children have raised some £5000 ($9000) US for these children through their UK "Webb Children's Wheelchair Fund" - raising money for wheelchairs for young people born with Spina Bifida.
